Isaiah: The Fifth Gospel

The early church referred to Isaiah as the Fifth Gospel. In fact, when St. Augustine was preparing for his baptism, his pastor encouraged him to read Isaiah as he moved closer to that momentous event. What is it about Isaiah that has proved so potent for the church as it wrestles with naming God, understanding God’s purposes with Israel and the world, and identifying Jesus Christ as the principle instrument of our redemption and the redemption of all creation? These questions and more will animate our time together as we seek to read and hear Christ’s living voice in the treasure chest of Isaiah’s prophetic legacy.

Dr. Mark Gignilliat, professor at Beeson Divinity School, will be our teacher. Mark was a member of North Hills and led our youth ministry from 1998 – 2002. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and he currently teaches Hebrew and Old Testament Exegesis and Theology. He is the author of many books and journal articles. Mark is married to Naomi, and they have four children. We are excited to have Mark return to North Hills to take us on a brief but rich study in the majestic book of Isaiah!
