Tom Wessel has lived in Greenville for most of his life. Born in Charleston, Tom moved with his family to Greenville when he was almost twelve years old. He later graduated from Furman University where he met his wife, Edie. They attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina then returned to Greenville where they completed residencies in Family Medicine. Tom then joined the physician faculty of the Family Medicine residency in Greenville where he taught residents and practiced medicine for 17 years. His interest in improving patient care and resident education drew him to work in clinical informatics, the intersection of clinical medicine and information technology. In 2003 Tom became Chief Medical Informatics Officer for Inpatient at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System where he has worked for the past 18 years.
Tom and his family first arrived at North Hills about nine years ago. He and Edie have had the privilege of serving as Life Group leaders for six years and in the college ministry for eight years. They have three wonderful sons – John, Stephen, and Nathan. Tom began serving as an elder in 2020, just a few weeks before the pandemic started!
Little known facts:
- Tom sang a solo broadcast live on the radio as a nine-year-old.
- Edie taught Tom to drive a stick shift.
- Tom taught himself computer programming.
